Snaps, Not Claps! is born from the profound dedication of Cherie Chillin’ da Conscious Poet Kabba, rooted in a promise made during a transformative visit to the House of Slaves on Goree Island in 2007 — the Sankofa Vow. This commitment revolves around sharing historical and contemporary narratives to educate and empower. Inspired by her transformative journey to Dakar, Senegal, Snaps, Not Claps remains steadfast in its mission to empower, encourage and enlighten those preparing to tell their stories.
The practice of snapping is rooted in its subtlety and less disruptive nature compared to traditional applause. It allows listeners to express their support and agreement in a way that feels more organic and in harmony with the intimate setting of a poetry slam. Each snap serves as a quiet, spontaneous burst of approval, a way for the audience to show solidarity with the poet without interrupting the flow of emotions.
This unique form of acknowledgment highlights the deep connection between the poet and the audience, creating a shared moment of understanding and empathy. Snapping has become a symbol of respect and recognition within the poetry slam community, embodying the spirit of support and unity that defines these gatherings.
